From the second Jason Todd showed up on Titans, fans of the comics figured something was coming down the pike for the character. While he’s perhaps most famously known as being only the second Robin, Jason Todd found a second life as a Batman villain and now reluctant ally. Now, after the revelations about Titans season 3 at DC FanDome, Curran Walters is doing some homework about how Todd became the Red Hood. In the iconic “Under the Red Hood” story arc, Batman finds that past rouges of his are being murdered. The person doing the killing seems to know a lot about him and the baddies. The ultimate revelation, of course, is that Jason Todd, thought to be dead after a readers’ poll killed him, is back.

Since then, the story found its way from the comic pages to both an animated film and the Arkham Knight video game. While it’s good that Curran Walters is diving into the Red Hood backstory, the character’s turn in Titans season 3 will be different than what we’re used to. Firstly, and most importantly, Jason Todd didn’t die. Rather, in the Titans season 2 finale, he left the team feeling abandoned by the fellow titans and the woman he was falling in love with. He will return as an antagonist in the season, but like his comics counterpart he will probably not stay a villain.

While some comics purists might object to this reimagining of the character, it’s a good thing. telling the same story over and over again is a waste of multiple adaptations. So, even though this version of the Red Hood will be different, the actor behind him will have done his homework about the characters’ origins.
